ECHO PARK, die neue Arbeit des Berliner Künstlers Florian Hetz entstand im Winter 2018 während eines Residenzstipendiums in der Tom of Finland Foundation Los Angeles. Drei Monate lang begleitete Hetz das Leben und die Sexualität schwuler Männer im Stadtteil Echo Park. Florian Hetz fotografierte seine Modelle in mehrstündigen Sessions. Bei den Zusammenkünften entstanden hunderte von Aufnahmen, deren Extrakt nun erstmals in Deutschland zu sehen ist. Florian Hetz dekonstruiert, seziert und sexualisiert die Köper seiner Modelle. Er zeigt vorwiegend Körperfragmente und Details: Trainierte Physis, Muskeln, Haare, Gesichter und Geschlechtsteile füllen die Bildräume. Detailaufnahmen von Gegenständen und Pflanzen ergänzen das Bild einer fragmentierten Gemeinschaft, einer von Diskriminierung, Gewalt und HIV immer wieder aufgebrochenen Community. Diese Gemeinschaft von schwulen Männern lässt sich ihre Sehnsucht nach Schönheit, Nähe, Spass und Verschmelzung nicht nehmen.

ECHO PARK, the new work of the Berlin artist Florian Hetz was created in the winter of 2018 during an artist residency at the Tom of Finland Foundation in Los Angeles. For three months Hetz portrayed the life and sexuality of gay men in the district Echo Park. Florian Hetz photographed his models in several hours lasting sessions. Hundreds of photographs were taken during those meetings, and the extract of those are now on view in Germany for the first time at Frappant Galerie Hamburg. Florian Hetz deconstructs, dissects and sexualises the bodies of his models. He mainly shows body fragments and details: trained physique, muscles, hair, faces and genitals fill the photos. Close ups of objects and plants complete the picture of a fragmented community, a community that has been repeatedly broken up by discri- mination, violence and HIV. This community of gay men does not let anyone take away their yearning for beauty, closeness, fun and fusion, but fights for the right for a self-determined and joyful life.
